D.C. United today announced the club will once again sell D.C. United Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise during the month of October. Partnering with Kicks Against Breast Cancer for the fourth consecutive year, United has produced D.C. United Breast Cancer Awareness hats, pins, mugs and bracelets that will be available for purchase beginning tonight at United’s Champions League game vs. San Juan Jabloteh and throughout the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Proceeds from all four items will benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, located at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD. To purchase, fans can visit dcuteamstore.com, one of United’s five merchandise kiosks on game days, or the Official Team Store at RFK Stadium’s Main Gate. Kicks Against Breast Cancer holds an annual women’s intercollegiate soccer tournament each April in honor and memory of Claudia Mayer, who died in 1996 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. The tournament is held at the Maryland SoccerPlex and features some of the top collegiate teams around the nation.
With approximately 50% of each hat, mug, bracelet, and pin sale donated to the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, last year’s initiative helped raise $10,000, a number that is hoped to be matched this year. Howard County General Hospital’s Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, a division of Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a leading-edge wellness model focused on helping individuals living with cancer and cancer survivors cope with the psychological and physical side effects of this disease, including post-mastectomy scarring and prosthetics, hair loss, edema, exhaustion and other physical issues. Founded in 1998, the center always welcomes gifts and donations from individuals, corporations and other organizations.
